2007 MS Wild West 150 Bike Tour
Sponsored by the All America Chapter, Panhandle Division, National Multiple Sclerosis Society Sixteen hams from Dumas, Borger and Amarillo provided communications for the event. Mobile units were stationed at each of the refreshment areas between Amarillo and Canadian, located about every ten miles. Neal, W5PVI (below) helped Gene, WA5ETK, at the first stop, located at old English Field, before he went on to his assignment at White Deer. Each mobile unit had magnetic signs on both sides that read, "MS BIKE TOUR COMMUNICATIONS."
Tom, AD5FD, provided communications at one of the more interesting areas, located near the Ranch Road 2373 (Pantex) intersection. The volunteers there had set up to appear as a MASH unit: Only a few riders stopped at this first opportunity. Below are three exceptions!
Most entrants rode conventional, geared bikes. But there were some into experimental models, like this 'recliner' machine: Camouflage covered an army cot and other 'furnishings':
Raymond, W5RAW, (in the red bike tour t-shirt, below) ran communications from his location, between Kingsmill and Celanese, just southwest of Pampa.
Cory, KD5ROK (at right, below), was stationed at an 'in the middle of nowhere' rest area, located about ten miles southwest of Miami.
All participants were served beef and chicken fajitas (with all the trimmings) at the evening celebration in Canadian. Here are eight members of the ham radio contingent:
John, WD5FOI (left) and Carl, N5YXN, ready to head for home, the amateur radio support effort's first day having been declared a success:
